Field Technician (Stormwater System Data Collection)


NCE, a civil engineering firm, is actively seeking multiple Temporary Field Technicians for a three- to six- -month stormwater data collection project in Los Gatos, CA. In this role, you will work in two-person teams to gather basic data on nearly 7,000 storm drain assets. All data collection will be done from street level (no confined entry requirements) using high resolution GPS equipment. This position is ideal for those with a strong work ethic, technical aptitude, and a commitment to safety. Travel and expense reimbursement may be available for out-of-town candidates.

Candidates may work full-time or part-time (at least 20 hours/week). Long-term employment may be available following this project for excellent performers.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, measure, and document storm drain assets such as the precise location, size, condition, depth, and flow orientation for a variety of storm drain assets managed by the Town of Los Gatos. The types of asset data to be collected include manholes, inlets, outfalls, and pipes.
  • Data will be collected using mobile devices and high-precision GPS units.
  • Work safely and efficiently with a field partner, adhering to safety protocols near traffic areas.

Job Requirements:

  • This will be a physical job that requires the ability to carry and operate hand-held equipment, walk long distances (on roads and sidewalks), in varying weather conditions (hot, cold, rain), and manipulate manhole lids (90-150 lbs.), sometimes in high traffic areas, with appropriate tools to access certain subsurface assets, for up to 10 hours per day. No confined entry is required (you will not need to enter into manholes).
  • High School diploma.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Punctuality, attention to detail, and a safety-oriented mindset.
  • Flexibility to work a mixed schedule (e.g., 10 eight-hour days on/four days off, swing shift, or other schedule in collaboration with field).

Other Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering
  • Familiarity with mobile data collection applications (ESRI Field Maps, Survey123) and various GPS survey equipment (e.g., Trimble Geo7x, Trimble R2, EOS Arrow Gold).
  • Basic understanding of storm drain systems.
  • Training will be provided.

Salary range: $25.00 to $35.00 per hour, DOE
