Staff Scientist

NCE is actively recruiting a Staff Scientist to support both our Environmental and Water Resources Practices. You will work on exciting interdisciplinary projects in the Lake Tahoe basin, northern Nevada, and the Sierra. We’re looking for a dynamic person with environmental and natural resource experience who enjoys a mix of office and field work and can apply analytical and critical thinking skills in both environments. Responsibilities:
- Contribute to a variety of projects, including infrastructure, redevelopment, recreation, and trail projects.
- Conduct field surveys, site inspections, sampling, and field mapping for stormwater, biological and aquatic resources, and infrastructure.
- Prepare inspection reports, maps, and forms.
- Efficiently identify, review, and apply technical and regulatory material.
- Read, interpret, and communicate permit requirements and mitigation measures to team members, clients, and agency staff.
- Apply field protocols to ensure project compliance.
- Support projects primarily in the Lake Tahoe basin, northern Nevada, and the Sierra.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams in a supportive but independent work environment.
- Safely operate four-wheel drive vehicles and access urban and remote sites.
- Learn and apply new skills and knowledge across various disciplines within environmental science.
- Maintain attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and clear written and verbal communication.
- Familiarize yourself with local, state, and federal regulations applicable to natural resource management, erosion and sediment control, water quality, and stormwater.
Qualifications (Must Have):
- Bachelor of Science in biology, natural resource science, water resources, watershed science, hydrology, environmental science/engineering, or related field.
- Working knowledge of regulatory agencies including TRPA, USACE, CDFW, NDEP, NDOW, and local Truckee Meadows agencies.
- Possess attention to detail and is well organized.
- Effective communicator (written and verbal).
- Capable and comfortable with independent work and group collaboration.
- Highly motivated, goal oriented, and possess a desire to learn.
Qualifications (Nice to Have):
- Minimum of one year of post-graduation experience performing field surveys, site inspections, and/or field mapping.
- Familiarity with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and California regulatory permitting.
- Basic ArcGIS mapping and analysis knowledge, familiarity with ArcGIS Online, and a desire to grow as an ArcGIS user.
- Possess an understanding of biological and aquatic resources.
- You must be willing to conduct routine field work and be comfortable working within construction sites.
- You must be comfortable spending long hours in the field and at times in remote locations.
Working Conditions: Field work will be required (e.g., site surveys on active construction sites, urban developed sites, remote locations, contaminated sites, etc.).
Salary range: is $59,500 to $68,000 annually, DOE.
